Mel Stride MP visited Age Concern Crediton recently, meeting with Jean May and treasurer John Potter. The trio were joined by local District Councillor Jim Cairney.

The meeting was held during Dementia Action Week to discuss the support that the charity provides, both at its centre in Deep Lane and in the community in residents’ homes. Mr Stride was also briefed on the vital work of the memory café, held every week on Tuesdays from 2pm-4pm, which is open to anyone living with dementia, as well as their carers and loved ones. Sessions usually include chair exercises, a light-hearted quiz, some singing and a cup of tea along with time to chat. There are also opportunities to play games, get involved with crafts and listen to guest speakers or entertainers. For carers, it is often a rare opportunity for some welcome respite and to speak to others in a similar position.

John said:

“It was great to welcome Mel and to update him on some of the progress we’ve made since he was last with us, such as purchasing our two new community vehicles. Our community club is currently operating on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and we have have a coffee morning every other Tuesday. Transport to and from the centre can potentially be provided and a freshly cooked two course meal is served for lunch.”

Mel added:

“The staff, trustees and volunteers here at Age Concern Crediton do an extraordinary job in looking after older residents in and around Crediton. I would strongly urge anyone who is able to help as a volunteer – either at the centre, as a driver or befriending residents in their own homes – to contact the centre on 01363 775008 or email [email protected].”
