EU Environmental Law

Dear Constituent,

Thank you for contacting me about the transfer of EU environmental law into UK law.

It has always been my view that we must ensure that our environment is protected after we leave the EU. Our natural environment is precious and fragile and I believe that we must do everything we can to ensure that it is properly managed.

The EU (Withdrawal) Act converts all EU environmental law into UK law when we leave the bloc and the manifesto on which I was elected in 2019 promised to deliver on the target of net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

I also want to assure you that an Environment Bill will help to protect and restore the environment. An Office for Environmental Protection will be created in order to establish a world-leading, independent environmental watchdog to hold the Government to account. Environmental principles will be introduced to guide future policy making.

No decisions have yet been taken on the UK’s future relationship with EU agencies including with the European Environment Agency. This is a matter for the negotiations.

Thank you again for taking the time to contact me.

Yours sincerely,

Mel Stride MP

MP for Central Devon
