  • MP PRAISES WORK OF SAMARITANS ON WORLD SUICIDE PREVENTION DAY

    Mel Stride

CENTRAL DEVON MP Mel Stride praised the “incredible” work of the Samaritans on World Suicide Prevention Day on Saturday (10/09/16). On average 100 people committed suicide every week in England and Wales in 2015, which was the leading cause of death for people aged 20-34.

    Mr Stride said:

“The rate of suicide in England and Wales has fallen by nearly a third since 1981 but it is a tragedy that still affects thousands of families every year. 90% of people who commit suicide have some sort of mental health problem and 75% of all deaths are male – two facts that need to be talked about if we are to make further progress in reducing the number of suicides in the UK. The work of the Samaritans in helping people talk through their problems, including those with suicidal thoughts, is incredible and on behalf of my constituents in Central Devon I thank their volunteers for giving up their time to help others in this way.”

The Samaritans can be contacted by telephone on 116 123, via email jo@samaritans.org or by visiting www.samaritans.org.uk. Their website also has information that may be useful to people who fear a family member or friend is struggling to cope and links to other organisations that help with specific problems such as debt problems, alcohol and drug dependency and sexual or domestic abuse.
