AN INITIATIVE to boost local trade in Ashburton this Christmas has been praised by the town’s MP. On Saturday November 5th Ashburton’s independent shops are planning a 10% discount day to kick start the Christmas trading period and Central Devon MP Mel Stride is urging local residents to get behind it.

Stuart Rogers, who runs Ashburton Post Office with his wife Jackie, today (21/10/16) met with Mr Stride to discuss the plans. He said:

“Ashburton has a fantastic variety of independent shops. Only this month we have seen our Fish Deli win a Taste of the West award and in September we saw our Food Festival needing to expand into North Street due to its growing success. But we also face significant challenges – most notably losing our last bank and seeing two local pubs close. If we want Ashburton to remain the vibrant town that we love, we need initiatives like this to make a few headlines and remind people that they don’t need to go any further do their Christmas shopping.”

    Mr Stride added:

“People come from all over South Devon and beyond to wander around Ashburton’s shops I have high hopes that this initiative will be a big hit. Stuart is right that there are always challenges, but there are also reasons to be optimistic – he doesn’t need to look any further than his own post office to see a success story. I strongly urge local residents to get behind the 10% discount day on November 5th as a way of supporting our local traders while getting a few bargains in the process.”
