Mel Stride

CENTRAL DEVON MP Mel Stride met with parish councillors in Sandford today on the site where a new community sports pavilion will be built, largely thanks to a £75,000 grant from Sport England. The pavilion will replace the existing Sandford Amateur Football Club hut which is several decades old and in desperate need of replacing. Additional funds will be provided by the football club as well as the Parish Council and work is due to start later this year after the tendering process is complete. Mr Stride said:

“Sandford is a village that has always punched above its weight and it was very exciting to be briefed on the plans for the new pavilion which will transform these playing fields into a superb sports and community facility. The Parish Council have worked hard to secure funding which is always the biggest hurdle and if everything goes smoothly I very much hope to come back next year for its opening!”

Sandford Parish Council Chairman Shuana Miles added:

“The local community has really got behind our plans to improve the quality of facilities here which will be used by the whole community, including the tennis club and the school, as well as the football club. Having a good pavilion with modern facilities is essential in providing an enjoyable and safe environment for sport and other activities and we are very much looking forward to getting the project started.”

Sandford AFC currently play in Division 4 and 8 of the Devon & Exeter Football League and last year were awarded with the Football Association’s chartered standard – a prestigious award that has adjudged the club to be well-run, sustainable, and to provide high quality coaching and a safe environment for children.
